JOHN FOX, R.C.A. (1927-2008)

Although I cannot claim any close friendship with John Fox, my wife Helen and I have been long time admirers of his work and proudly have three large scale compositions by Fox in our home. Mom too has one most prominently displayed in her home.

There are two significant tributes which serve as accolades to the esteem in which Fox is held. In Louise Dompierre's important 1986 exhibition catalogue, John Lyman: I live by my eyes the photograph of Lyman (page 89) proudly seated in front of a large painting, not a Lyman but, in fact a John Fox, silently speaks volumes perhaps about both artists. Then, more recently, the numerous both talented and accomplished artists who contributed their prose published in the catalogue for the Refiguration exhibition - a significant exhibition hosted by the McClure Gallery in Westmount, curated by acclaimed Canadian art historian and Fox's widow, Sandra Paikowsky and which focused on what I would refer to as the last phase of his painterly evolution - is further testimony to Fox's importance as a leading contemporary artist of his generation.

As always with these catalogued shows there are numerous individuals who contributed to make it possible. Of course we are indebted to Sandra Paikowsky for her endorsement and support, Victoria Stusiak, John Fox's assistant and sometimes model later in his career who provided the photography for the catalogue and on line presentation, Mrs. Judy Hayes, author of the informative and analytic essay provided herewith, most importantly, the generous lenders of John Fox paintings to the exhibition, translator Elise Bonnette for her sensitivity to the original text, catalogue designer Chantal Godbout, the Klinkhoff Gallery team including Mom, Eric, Jon, Johanne, Lynn, John and finally Craig, the youngest member of the team who was responsible for overseeing the production of the catalogue.
